How ALDEP Works

The algorithm consists of two main procedures: selection and placement. The selection procedure determines which facility to place next, based on the total closeness rating (TCR) of each facility with the already placed facilities. The TCR is a measure of how desirable it is to place two facilities close to each other, and it is usually obtained from a from-to chart or a relationship diagram. The facility with the highest TCR is selected for placement. The placement procedure determines where to place the selected facility on the grid, based on the minimum material handling cost (MMC) criterion. The MMC is a measure of how much it costs to transport materials between two facilities, and it is usually calculated from the distance and the flow rate between them. The selected facility is placed on the grid location that minimizes the MMC with the already placed facilities. If there are multiple locations with the same MMC, then a tie-breaking rule is applied, such as choosing the location closest to the center of gravity of the layout.


Advantages and Disadvantages of ALDEP
